A Paperless TrialTM is a system combining the use of two new applications: (1) database case management; and (2) interactive touch board technology. The primary difference between traditional paper trials and Paperless TrialsTM is that everything necessary to prepare and try a case, can now be put into a single digital format and viewed on a large screen, which is also a digital drawing board. There is no longer a need for litigators to bounce back and forth between an overhead projector for documents, a chalkboard for diagrams, a VCR for video tapes, and bulky poster boards for exhibits. The entire case can now be loaded onto the hard drive of a computer and projected onto a 72" big screen, eliminating the need to bring boxes and boxes of paper documents into the courtroom.

All of the evidence collected during the discovery process is digitized and put into a digital format. During trial, videos, transcripts, audio tapes, and exhibits can be called upon by the click of a button and projected for the judge and jury to see. Screens that have attorneys’ or experts’ written mark-ups can be saved and new exhibits entered into evidence can be scanned in by the trial technician, instantly becoming part of the trial database.

Is the system easy to use?
Yes, particularly because we provide the operator. This allows the attorney to concentrate on his or her case, and the affect he or she is having with the judge and jury, while the trial technician is responsible for bringing up all documents and video for display.

What is an interactive touch board?
Imagine displaying an exhibit on a screen, walking up to and drawing on the screen with different colored pens, and, at your discretion, either erasing the annotations, or saving them and re-admitting the exhibit into the database as a modified document. The SMARTboard technology allows you to move documents around and simultaneously run video while viewing a document using a split screen view.

How efficient is the system?
In a matter of seconds, we can display a document, magnify a specific paragraph, and highlight a key sentence. There is no longer a need to search through boxes to retrieve a document. The audio/visual impact alone is enough to wake-up even the most listless juror. In the hands of our experienced trial technicians, critical evidence that used to seem boring is now presented in a clear and exciting way. Judges and juries will appreciate how quickly a document or an exhibit can be called up, enlarged, annotated, presented, and readmitted into the database.

How expensive is it?
The cost will depend on how much data is stored in the system and how many days the system is used at trial. When compared to the costs of producing large blow-ups and poster boards and renting overhead projectors and audio/visual equipment, a Viking Paperless Trial is comparable in price, while offering significant advantages over traditional set-ups.

By combining digital case management with SMARTboard technology a Viking Paperless TrialTM yields an efficient trial with the technology of today. This system will have a more dynamic effect then any other tool you have ever used. If your goal is to make the trial experience effortless, efficient, organized, and stimulating, you should make your next trial a Paperless TrialTM.
